What is CAT Exam?

Common Admission Test or CAT exam is a common aptitude test, which a candidate has to clear for admission to the MBA courses offered by 20 IIMs and over 1,200 B-schools in India. Over two lakh candidates apply for the exam every year. The CAT question paper comprises MCQs & non-MCQs from Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) and Quantitative Ability (QA). Difficulty level of the exam is moderate to high.

Last year, the structure of CAT was revised due to coronavirus pandemic. The duration of CAT exam was reduced from three to two hours and the total number of questions was reduced from 100 to 76. The exam was conducted in three slots instead of two. IIM Ahmedabad has retained the same pattern for CAT 2022 exam. There is no change in the test structure as shared in the CAT exam notification.

Latest Changes in CAT 2022:

· Eligibility Criteria relaxed: The eligibility criteria of minimum marks in graduation has been relaxed for students due to COVID-19 pandemic. Candidates can mention “promotion/pass” in their CAT 2022 application form. This relaxation is only for candidates who are completing the bachelor’s degree this year or are in the final year bachelor’s programme (graduation years – 2022 and 2023). · CAT 2021 Application fee had increased: The application fee has been hiked by 10 per cent from last year. The CAT 2021 fee for General and all unreserved category students has been increased from INR 2,000 to INR 2,200 while for Reserved category students it has been increased from INR 1,000 to INR 1,100.

· Number of CAT test cities increased: This year, CAT 2022 exam will be conducted in so many cities across India. Last year, the total number of cities where the exam was conducted was 156 of 2021.

· CAT test city preference increased: The total number of cities one can select in the application form for allotment of CAT 2022 test centre has been increased to six. This will give students more options of test city selection as per convenience in the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

· Srinagar included in test city option: Now candidates can select Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) as a preferred test city. The CAT exam will be held in the city for the first time.

CAT 2022 Admit Card

CAT 2022 admit card is now available on the official website for download. The CAT admit card is a mandatory document to be carried to the exam centre, thus candidates must download a color print-out of the same. It is advised to download two copies, as one copy is to be submitted at the exam centre. The CAT 2021 admit card has test centre location, exam slot, reporting time and other related information printed on it. Here’s the process to download CAT 2022 admit card:

· Log on to CAT website:

· Click on 'login' tab

· Enter CAT 2022 application number and password

· Go to 'admit card' section

· Click on 'download'

CAT Exam Day Guidelines

Candidates appearing for the exam must carry the following documents to the CAT exam centre to get entry inside the exam hall:

· Admit card: Candidates appearing for the CAT 2022 exam must carry print out of their admit cards with photo affixed on it. Entry without admit card and photo ID will not be permitted.

· Identity Proof: Along with the admit card, candidates are required to carry a photo ID proof such as College ID (must be supported with a valid debit/credit card), employer ID, driving license, passport, PAN card, Voter ID or Aadhaar card.

· Name change document: In case a candidate changed their name, they will be required to carry a name change certificate/document

Items prohibited inside the CAT 2022 exam hall:

· Calculator, watch, phone, iPad or any other electronic item

· Bags and purses

· Eatables and beverages

· Jewellery and accessories that contain metal

· Jackets and clothes with pockets

· Closed footwear

Note: Candidates with a metal implant, pacemaker, etc. in their body will be required to bring medical certificate of the same at test centre.

CAT 2022 Exam Pattern & Test Structure

CAT question paper is divided into three sections: VARC, DILR and QA. The candidates are required to solve both MCQ and Non-MCQ type questions. What to Expect in CAT 2022 Question Paper?

As no change has been announced in the number of slots of CAT 2022 exam this year, the question paper will be on the same pattern as last year and so will be the test structure. Read below key things to expect from CAT 2022 question paper:

· CAT 2022 question paper will have three sections – VARC, DILR and Quantitative Aptitude

· The sequence of CAT 2021 question paper will be: Section 1 – VARC, Section 2 – DILR, Section 3 – Quantitative Aptitude

· VARC will have 24 questions, DILR will have 26 question and Quantitative Aptitude will have 26 questions

· VARC and DILR will have MCQs and non-MCQs both while Quantitative Aptitude will have only MCQs

· Each section of CAT 2021 will have a time-limit of 40 minutes

· The CAT 2021 question paper of all three slots will be different and there could be marginal difference in the difficulty levels

CAT 2022 Exam Preparation Tips

A minimum of six months of preparation is required to score 99+ percentile in the CAT exam. There are three elements in CAT 2021 preparation – conceptual clarity, practice and revision. Those taking CAT exam for the first time, should start much earlier (by March). They should first get familiar with the syllabus and exam pattern and then make a study plan.
